Joomla Website Optimization for Better Speed and Performance

The loading speed at which the website gets load is very crucial. It also affects search engine's rankings because search engines objects to serve most relevant content or information to its users in shortest time possible. Providing links of the sites that are slow is not a good idea and so fast loading websites are ranked on top by search engines.

As and when the number of modules, components and plugins used in the Joomla based website increases, the loading speed of the website decreases.

Optimization of a Joomla Website/Blog -

1] Site Structure

The first and foremost thing to look at the time of optimizing the website is the structure of the site. This includes - the HTML code, the URL structure, title, and Meta tags.

The most common problem in any poorly optimized website is the navigation system of the website that is not visible to search engines. Search engines are easily able to identify links embedded in JavaScript and Flash and so it is advisable to provide plain HTML or CSS based navigation system in the site.

Moreover, search engines always like the websites having clean URLs. Some things that should be considered are -

- The Title tag and Meta description tags should have primary keywords and phrases.

- The Title tag should be only up to 60-80 characters and Meta tag up to 200 characters maximum.

- The most important thing is the Meta and Title tags should be different for every webpages of the website.

- At least two or more paragraphs of content in a webpage should be relevant and fresh. The keywords should not be stuffed in the content but it should be used in a balanced way.

- The Home page of the site should include unique and attractive content with Primary keywords and phrases.

2] Image Optimization

For any website or a blog, images and other graphics used are an important part. Perhaps, if used properly the site looks better and attractive but if used inappropriately it can slow down the loading speed.

Joomla users make a biggest mistake when they try to resize an image in a text editor itself. It is a bad way of inserting images because the image will be resized using height, width, HTML or CSS parameters but it will be loaded of full size by the browser and then will be resized before being shown to the users. This means the full size image is being transferred to the reader before shown to the visitor. Also, if images are resized in the browser, it appears to be blurred and of low quality. The solution to this problem is - the images should be exactly the pixel size as to be shown in the final page on the website.

3] Joomla Cache

Before launching a Joomla based website it should be taken care that Joomla Cache is being activated. This helps to increase the loading speed of the site.

After setting the cache type in the Global Configuration, it should be checked that the cache plugin is activated by going in the Plug-in Manager. Sometimes, though cache is enabled the plug-ins is left out disabled. Another thing to check is the order of the plug-ins should be correct.

Other than these three things, many other things need to maintain before and after making a Joomla site live.
